Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose handmade soap?

  • It’s simple.  The ingredients.  Our handcrafted soaps are made with nourishing oils that moisturize and protects your skin.  Commercially produced soaps are made with tallow (animal fat) and other low cost oils that don’t offer any skin care benefits.  Handmade soaps retain all the natural glycerin in the soap unlike commercial bars. Glycerin, a humectant, attracts moisture to the skin.  Commercial soaps are often drying because the natural glycerin has been removed during the manufacturing process.

I have allergies and sensitive skin. Do you have any natural soaps that I can use?

  • Yes, We have our unscented and uncolored "Old Fashioned Lard and Lye Soap" and our "Traditional Castile Soap".

Is there Lye in your soap that will burn my skin?

  • The short answer to this question is "No". All soap is made with Lye (sodium Hydroxide). However, the process of saponification causes the oils and the lye to mix and bond together and all of the lye is used-up. So the final soap product is created and the lye is gone.

How do you make your soap?

  • Soap is the end result of a chemical reaction mixing oils, lye and water.  We use a cold process soap making method.  The combination for the heat from the melted oils and the heat from the lye water provides all that is needed to saponify.

How long do you let your soap cure?

  • A minimum of four (4) to six (6) weeks to ensure a hard, long lasting, mild bar of clean soap. Cold Process soap-making takes 4-6 weeks to produce a long-lasting hard bar of soap. The curing process over the 4-6 weeks allows the water in the soap to evaporate. Soap used before it has adequately cured would dissolve quickly in the shower.

How long will my soap last?

  • It depends entirely on you as the bath lover or shower taker and how you treat your soap.   A typical bar of handmade soap will last anywhere from a week to three (or more) weeks.  The bar will lasts longer if not placed directly in a shower stream and is placed on a self-draining soap dish with the ability to dry between uses. You can also hang your bar of soap in a soap saver pouch so that the air will dry it on all sides between uses!   Cure time makes a big difference.  Longer cure time means longer lasting bar.

Why is handmade soap from 4 Drections Natural Soap better than store bought soap?

  • Store bought soaps contain detergents and are technically not classified as soap at all! True soap is simply an emulsification of oils and salt. Commercial soaps are usually not that. Those soaps also tend to be extremely drying and irritating to the skin. Reason being, the glycerin naturally occurring in soap is a profitable by-product. Instead of keeping the natural moisturizing qualities in the soap, these companies choose to sell its glycerin and leave the bar of soap with very little moisturizing properties. We think it's best to leave soap in its naturally occurring,  ultra moisturizing state!
